ASHP represents pharmacists who serve as patient care providers in acute and ambulatory settings. Each year, ASHP holds a Midyear Clinical Meeting which brings more than 20,000 pharmacy professionals and students across the globe. Its purpose is to educate and enhance the knowledge, skills, and abilities of pharmacists, pharmacy associated personnel, and pharmacy students about health systems. It focuses on improving patient care through various educational activities throughout the comprehensive 5 day program. And this past 2022 Midyear Clinical Meeting was a well-balanced conference with entertainment and education at the heart of Las Vegas, Nevada.
Many students who attended the 2022 Midyear Clinical Meeting expressed their enthusiasm for these kinds of opportunities to network and be a part of this dynamic field of pharmacy. Here is how Heather Yen P4 put it, “I had my doubts about the value of attending ASHP initially, especially since it was right before finals and would be at the expense of valuable study time, but I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and it was definitely well worth it!”
Here is some advice from those who attended 2022’s Midyear meeting (heads up for Midyear 2023!):
- Attend the pharmacist programming to gain more practical clinical knowledge that could help with APPE rotations as well as residency interviews
- Attend the PhORCAS info session to gage how the online residency application process will play out
- Go to the residency showcase (even if you’re a P1 or 2 or 3) to see how it works to better prepare for the next time you attend a residency showcase
- You can even participate in the poster presentations by submitting a proposal on the website! In 2022, Jason Jang and other P4s’ research title was “Outcome of Enoxaparin Bridging in Left Ventricular Assist Devices in an Ambulatory Care Setting”
- Interact with some out-of-state program residency directors and residents if you’re thinking about exploring other great state programs
